Oil industry and PSNI tackle oil theft concerns

PSNI are urging householders to be vigilant against oil thefts and take precautions to ensure that your home heating oil is stored safely. Police are working in partnership with the Northern Ireland Oil Federation and OFTEC to find ways to prevent this type of crime and produce an ‘oil safe’ consumer guide. David Blevings from NIOF explained: “We have responded to our customer’s concerns in relation to oil theft and are currently in discussions with the PSNI to produce an “oil safe” consumer guide in partnership with OFTEC which gives advice on safe oil storage, gauges and tank alarms. There are a number of products readily available that can be used to protect your tank and concerned consumers should seek advice from OFTEC Registered Technicians who will happily give impartial advice on how best to secure and protect your tank.” A police spokesperson said: “Theft of oil fuel is an opportunistic crime and we would advise residents that the best chance of keeping oil safe is to make it as difficult as possible for thieves to gain access to your tanks. Try and ensure your oil tank is not clearly visible from the road and make sure it is situated somewhere that is well lit and not close to alleyways or pathways. Lock all side and rear gates with a padlock. Consider external sensor lighting as this prevents a potential thief approaching your home unseen. “It only takes a few seconds everyday to check your tank and keep an eye on the level. Alternatively install an audible alarm to alert you if the oil level drops. In the current economic climate none of us can afford to lose out on even a litre of oil." Police would appeal to anyone who has information in relation to oil thefts or anyone who has concerns about this type of crime to contact them on 0845 600 8000. Information about crime can also be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
